If someone will accuse me of not paying too much attention for my family because of the internet, I will readily plead guilty. Guilty as I'll ever be, the internet indeed is a culprit for many things disregarded. One of them is having a quality time with your loved ones.
Before the popularity of the internet, family members tend to gather in the living room to watch a basketball finals, a mass by the Pope, or simply to watch a television program or a movie. But now, youngsters prefer to stay in their room with their virtual friends. They prefer doing Facebook, MySpace or Twitter than asking their parents or siblings help for their homework.
This is is just one of the things that is being 'killed' by the internet, as Telegraph calls it. In a recent article, they listed the "50 things that are being killed by the internet" with 'Watching television together' at no. 17.
Also included in their list at no. 12 is 'Writing letters/penpals'. Of course, at our modern age, who would want to write a lengthy letter in an in-editable piece of paper when they can do it faster and more convenient on e-mails and blogs, with the convenience of editing it anytime they want. Penpals are also now a thing of the past with the emergence of Instant Messengers.
The dying industry of print magazine is also slightly mentioned at no. 7, Adolescent nerves at first porn purchase. Not only in adult magazines is the internet a big hindrance of expansion, travel, news and celebrity gossips magazines are also being endangered by the internet. More people prefer browsing their way to these fields, for free, than spending some bucks on paper copies.
One funny member of the list is at no. 32 with Chuck Norris's reputation. "The absurdly heroic boasts on Chuck Norris Facts may be affectionate, but will anyone take him seriously again?" Need I say much? I don't want a roundhouse kick in my face.
In the end, these 'bad' things brought about by the internet is dwarfed by the good things it has given us.
