Name of your website?

osition Lab

Your name?

George Drumer

Your Location (city, etc)

Manchester, UK

What is the website about

SEO, ranking well on Google. The site also clearly explains the fundamentals of SEO so people can carry it out for themselves if they wish.

What inspired you to launch your own website?

In my industry, it's a sine qua non. But this one has literally just launched, so it will be a while before great ranks come my way.

When did you launch your first website, and what was it?

In around '99, it was an SEO site - it got to number 6 in Altavista for the phrase: search engine optimisation - but I never had that much time to work on it, I was busy on other clients sites. That's a common complaint in SEO circles. (Or do I mean 'common excuse'?) :-)

How did you decide on a name for your website?

The name was already decided upon when I arrived at the company - but it's a good name.

What makes it different from other, similar offerings?

It gives a a much fuller picture of how how to do SEO than the vast majority of other websites offering the same service. Many sites act like they have something to hide or as if there is some big secret to SEO. There isn't. We wanted to make ourselves completely transparent, particularly since search engine optimisation is often seen as smoke-and-mirrors or snake oil. You could visit our site, find out what to do and carry it out yourself if you wanted.

What is your eventual goal? (To sell it, keep it for income, secure a book or other mainstream media deal?)

The goal for the website is to make it rank as well as possible in the search engines, therefore bringing in customers. That's it, that's the goal.

How does your investment of time and money balance against your success?

This remains very much to be seen, but I don't anticipate any glitches because I know how I want to position the site.

If you had an unlimited development budget for development, how would you change your site?

I wouldn't change the site, I would get links to the site from as many sources as possible. For complete SEO, the sources have to vary: blogs, directories, adverts, news sites, press releases, social media, forums and so on, ad infinitum.

If your site got really big, really quickly, would you be able to keep up with the demand?

Yes, no question. If anything it would simplify things greatly as I could cherry-pick the best clients.

What unexpected costs and headaches have you had to deal with?

We had to hire a freelance coder to deal with a rush of work on the site, that's been the biggest expense.

What has been your biggest challenge?

Trying to make sure that the content stands up to scrutiny - it's easy to write something that isn't technically 100% spot on, or to refer to 'search engines' when you really mean 'Google', and vice versa. Also, as search engines change the way they rank sites, or the services they offer, or the affiliations they enter, your information can suddenly become quite wrong.

What method has been most successful for promoting your website?

That's a question for the future, but I'm going to say the answer is organic white-hat SEO. That's the plan, anyway. In my experience, if you offer your services online, around 40% of your business ought to be coming from search engine queries.

How has running your website differed from your expectations?

It hasn't, yet.

How long have you run the site already, and how long will you continue to keep it up if you don't enjoy big gains in traffic, income or popularity?

It's been going for around two weeks, and I don't anticipate too much difficulty getting the traffic.

What are the most important things in SEO?

Having good content that people will want to link to. Getting as many incoming links to your site as possible. Knowing what people are looking for, and adjusting your site to that end.

What is your website address?

[Ed note: what's the point of being #1 or #10... I'd prefer to be #17267162 if I was getting quality traffic rather than every idiot that just clicks the first thing he sees. -Wilbur]
