Owning a site needs a lot of maintaining to do. For some people, using a leaving a trackback or sending a ping makes it an easy thing to share what their sites contents are.
Typepad uses this features, and Blogger now has enabled linking features for you to see who links to your entry. But wordpress has minimize their use of these to minimize spams.
