Ten years ago, if you had a funny article on the internet, you could become an overnight celebrity online. If you had a great song, flash video game or something interactive, you would hit it that much bigger. Technology is different today, and even the brightest writers I know stand a near-zero risk of getting famous. Video, however, can still make you an overnight success. There's a whole page on Wikipedia of YouTube celebrities who have earned serious fame outside of the internet world, and it still isn't too late to get in the action. If you're not doing video, now may be the time. You don't have to be brilliant, but you do have to try. You can't predict the next big thing, but the future of the web is video, and the future is already here. You can't fight it, but it's so easy to embrace it, you should try. If you don't make your own videos, YouTube allows you to embed them into your site anyhow. Tags: video • internet celebrities • 0 Comments. - Permalink |

When I was just a wee, scrapping lad in my late twenties, I ran a number of fairly successful websites. My coding skills weren't great, but it didn't matter because technology hadn't yet left me in the dust. When I moved my biggest site to a CMS (Content Management System), it changed everything forever. If you're hand-coding a website (or using a non-server-based program like Dream Weaver), you'll only be able to update as often as you, personally, as a human being, can find the time for. By using WordPress, Blogger, PHPNuke, or any of the like, a few things change: You can allow comments and ratings, making your site bigger and more interesting, effortlessly. You can invite other writers to participate, and favorite writers to edit and moderate, and the site can grow even when you take a day off or sleep. You can change the whole site, dating back to forever, with just a quick line of code. You can have an RSS feed to spool out your content to the whole web. Your site will be dynamic and modern. If you have a website, a good way to get some traffic and search engine preference is by getting other sites to link back to you. There are right and wrong ways to do it.Best way is to pick out a handful of sites, and link to them first. Don't even tell them that you did, just do it. Some will notice it and write to you with thanks (or maybe blog about it). Once a month has passed, write to the rest of them and say "I've been linking to you for a while, please consider linking back". Most will be flattered and give you the link. No matter what you do, don't carpet bomb random sites, or even the sites that you love, and say things like, "hey, if you like to me and show me where the link is, I'll link back to you!" Don't ask me to do something you won't even do for me! And in general, don't carpet bomb. If you send the link request to a thousand sites, we'll know it and you'll get no respect. Give that much better, and when you do give links, don't bury them deep inside your site. Keep them prominent, so they'll actually benefit the other webmasters. [Ed note: don't send a email saying you saw someones website and think it is great... especially if you have never looked at the website] Tags: reciprocal links • tips • 1 Comments. - Permalink |
