W3C Validation; Social Bookmarking and My Usual Bad Attitude!

By Wilbur Corncob at 05/17/07 07:23
[404 Check: was link to http:/ / www. webmastergrade. com/ 2007/ 05/ 04/ top -12 -social -bookmarking -sites/ , anchor: Top 12 social bookmarking sites]
Here is list of top social bookmarking sites, submit your sites... Why not list which ones use nofollow href tags and nofollow meta tags?

Most directories suck and could do a whole lot better
My friend Lyndon was talking about SMO (Social Media Optimisation) and directories the other day and pissed a couple of people off. Most directories seem to be clones of each other.

Got an SEO Question? Ask Me
Well, as a follow-up to my recent post Got an S E O Question? But it is the war and peace kinda answers that will do everyone some good!

Viral Marketing - what is it and why should you care?
Too bad we aren't all the marketing geniuses that the viral marketing promoters hope we can be. Come to think of it, I've never need a viral marketing scheme being promoted by effective viral marketing!

Ask the Experts: Will W3C Validation Affect My Search Engine Rankings?
The short answer is "No." While we advocate W3C validation as a general web development best practice, we are not aware of any direct... The way it can have a direct effect on the search engines and users is by catching mistakes in your tags that might cause large blocks of text to be unseen by both!

My comments in Italic.

Freedbacking; Bloglines Bites the Dust!

By Wilbur Corncob at 05/13/07 11:31
freedbacking Freedbacking; Bloglines Bites the Dust!
Bloglines has always been my favorite RSS reader. The format is the easiest to read and since the info is kept on the web, it works independent of what computer I am using.

Except for an occassional hicup Bloglines has worked exceptional well. I track 303 feeds with them.

A few days ago all except for a handful stopped showing up as new items. Although one says "Updated: Sun, May 13 2007 5:25 AM," nothing new was shown to me.

Since I use Bloglines for serious work, it's time to replace them with something that works for me!

Tin Foil Hat Cure for Mind Control?
By Martin at 05/05/07 10:50

Can you prevent mind control by wearing a tin hat? Many believe that a tin foil hat will blog mind control transmission from the government. An official study was done (probably with your tax dollars) to find out the truth.

You can follow the link above to find out as mind control is the ultimate form of privacy invasion!

We see that Technorati shows the description for "Privacy when Computers Forget!" but uses the link for "Tin Foil Hat Cure for Mind Control?".

This seems to be a recent upgrade!

Patents, Link Analysis and You

By Wilbur Corncob at 05/12/07 18:23
link analysis Patents, Link Analysis and You
SEO: Link Analysis, Web Spam, and the Cautious Surfer is a great look at how pages can be ranked by analyzing how random or cautious surfers might end up at a given page.

This goes outside what a search engine can do by spidering pages, I think. It goes into the behavior of people in their surfing. What links do they follow?

Now the question is who would you give that information to? You give it to whoever's toolbar you have installed! Ouch!

In return what do you get?

Top Paying Keywords

By Wilbur Corncob at 05/12/07 18:19
success stories Top Paying Keywords
MONEY: 200 top paying Adsense keywords list - every week ok, here is a great list of 200 keywords that will supposedly pay you between $9.10 and $44.47.

The list is really one of keywords that at least one person has bid up to $9.10 through $44.47 on.

The top being "asbestos attorney" for $44.47. Now, the idea is that because I mentioned that in my blog if I have adsense, the big dollars will start rolling in because everyone will be excited and click away.

That is if you think google will instantly recognize that the $44.47 ad should appear on your website, and every page view. Then you also think that everyone visiting your website has some interest in "asbestos attorney"! Yeah, right! The Brooklyn Bridge is for sale and you can start collecting tolls today!

The funny thing about Google Adsense is that is really works. People click on ads they are interesting in. They don't just click away to make revenue for you!

What this list will do, however, is inspire a whole string of useless websites directed to the 200 keywords listed. If you run a directory, this is a good list of keywords to add to your spam filters!

Oh! I forgot! EVERYONE is looking for an "asbestos attorney". I gotta go puke.

Tew Google Patent; insight or disinformation?

By Wilbur Corncob at 05/12/07 18:12
seo Tew Google Patent; insight or disinformation?
SEO: The new Google Patent and the new quality guidelines provides a great analysis of the new Google Patent issues on April 26, 2007.

When reading it remember that the patent is a theory. Google may use all the techniques describe it exclusively. They may not use any of them and/or they may use techniques for indexing and ranking pages.

The best technique for fighting spammers is disinformation to send them on wild goose chases. What better than to patent stuff you don't use?

You can ignore all these patent formulas is you create a useful and interinteresting experience for your users, remembering that the search engines basically read text; ie: your flash and graphic files won't provide them much food.

You should also take the automated web page generation programs, templates and the like and shove them where the sun don't shine!

Trackback and Technorati; Good ideas gone bad

By Wilbur Corncob at 05/12/07 17:36
technorati Trackback and Technorati; Good ideas gone bad
Trackbacks seem to be broken thank god for Technorati and Y! tells us how lucky we are because Technorati is the only decent source to tell us who has linked to our blogs.

I disgree. Technorati has too many blogs it doesn't track at all, or update for almost a year. Also in the past couple days they are showing the wrong posts.

There are two problems with trackbacks. First they scream, SPAM ME. Second they are depending on special programming on both ends!

The real answer has been with you since the begining, your server log files. These will tell you with who is referring to your website. If you are worried about referral spam, just read the referring page and see if your link is on it. You need to do that with trackbacks anyway.
