According to Dr. Tracy Alloway of the Stirling University in Scotland, who "extensively studied working memory and believes it to be far more important to success and happiness than IQ", using Facebook apps like games such as Sudoku and War series makes a person more intelligent. On the other hand, Twitter and YouTube "diminishes it (working memory)".
According to him working memory "involves the ability both to remember information and to use it." Playing games such as those mentioned above apparently increases a person's ability to plan and to cope faster with new instructions and new strategies.
'I'm not saying they're good for your socialisation skills, but they do make you use your working memory,'' Calloway said. 'You're keeping track of past actions and mapping the actions you're going to take.''he added.
Twitter and YouTube makes you no more than a reading, watching and texting user which involves only a small significant of working memory, almost one at all.
''On Twitter you receive an endless stream of information, but it's also very succinct,'' said Dr. Alloway. ''You don't have to process that information. 'Your attention span is being reduced and you're not engaging your brain and improving nerve connections.''
She mentioned that there were evidences backing up that linking television viewing, including that of YouTube, has something to do with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). As for Twitter along with its 'texting', shortened-messages nature, it has been associated with lower IQ scores.
